A common fear among new investors is: can bitcoin be destroyed?
Technically, to destroy Bitcoin, you would need to achieve the impossible:
-
Shut down every miner in the world simultaneously.
-
Turn off the entire internet globally.
-
Locate every seed phrase written on paper.
It is physically impossible to do this.
Even if you banned it in the US, Europe, and China, the network would just keep running in Africa and South America.
Even if you cut undersea cables to split the internet, the network can transmit via satellite (Blockstream has satellites in space broadcasting the blockchain 24/7).
Bitcoin is a hydra.
The only way to kill it is to make something better that everyone voluntarily switches to. But since Bitcoin has the network effect and liquidity, that is unlikely.
So can bitcoin be destroyed? Only if civilization itself collapses. And if that happens, your dollars in the bank won’t matter anyway.
